10 Character Traits of Highly Successful People

Have you ever wondered why so many people are fascinated by the success of life? And just as important, what are the “success traits” that set some of them so strikingly apart from the rest?

Obviously, “success” means different things to different people. There are so many definitions of success. Moreover, success in one area does not necessarily rule out complete failure in another.

If you are a successful businessman, and your relationship with your family is cold and distant– are you successful? If you are a successful leader, but your health is suffering, and you don’t have the energy to work, do you think you’ve succeeded?

The truth about success is that we all recognize successful people as valuable people. The value they bring to society is what makes them successful.

We respect successful people in all areas of life, be it sports, business, or even politics. We recognise them for being able to control their lives and gain the respect of others. They are constantly improving, growing, and setting new standards for themselves.

They are what we want to be, what we dream of being.

If you are reading this blog, we can assume one thing: you have goals and dreams you want to achieve.

Maybe you want to start a business from home or be at the top of your business.

Maybe you want to lose weight and get fit, or you want to write a book or talk on stage.

It doesn’t matter what your dream is; the important thing is that you have it.

But How Do I Succeed?

Success is not a matter of chance or good luck. Success is a skill that everyone can learn. If you want to succeed, you have to grasp some essential “success traits” that can set you apart. You have to be productive, inculcate positive characteristics within yourself, and develop strong habits.

Success leaves a mark. This means that it is very likely that someone has already been successful in the area where you wish to thrive. Simply aligning your actions with other successful people (following their footsteps) is often the best way.

But, bear heed. Following someone’s footsteps does not guarantee success, it only provides a framework for taking action. Just as you can’t be your idol and vice versa, you must eventually go your own way and define success on your terms.

That being said, let’s look at some of the most common, positive success traits that all successful people seem to share.

Ten Positive Character Traits of Highly Successful People

The success traits that set you apart

Steve Jobs. Oprah Winfrey. Bill Gates. Elon Musk. Jeff Bezos.

Besides being successful, all their life stories also show that they are highly disciplined people who made sure to nurture very specific skills and traits within themselves.

Here are the ten positive success traits you’d want if you want to do great at life:

1. An instinct to compete

Successful people tend to be competitive, it’s in their very nature. Success means you have to win. There are many reasons why you seek to be successful, but we all approach it differently. Successful people are crazy about finding creative ways to stand out from the competition. And they hate losing with an enduring passion.

People often confuse this with work ethics. But hard work is not the goal here. Their goal is the ultimate result that they have envisioned and they will not settle for less. The competitive urge to do more than anyone else paves the way for their success.

2. Letting go of the things that don’t serve you

The ability to let go is VITAL to being successful. No matter how successful you are, if you hold onto your past and the mistakes you made along the way, it will only serve to slow you down. One of the key success traits that help you move onto bigger better things, is that you do not linger in the past. You improvise, adapt, overcome, and embrace bigger challenges.

3. A relentless need to improve

Successful people are always trying to improve themselves. They are their own worst critics — making sure to double down on themselves and being extremely disciplined. Never satisfied and always striving to be better, their biggest competition is the version of themselves that existed yesterday.

4. Self-discipline

Self-discipline is one of the most essential success traits – and we cannot emphasise it enough. It is a habit that can be developed by clearly understanding what you want and ensuring that your desire to succeed outweighs the consequences of not doing so.

If you want to train five times a week, you can imagine and visualize the great benefits of training with your ultimate goal in mind. If you want to achieve everything you dream of, self-discipline is the perfect place to start. It is what lets us truly take control of our circumstances and blaze a path ahead.

5. Resilience

Resilience is indispensable to our society. The most resilient are those who walk the deepest valleys and still smile and emerge stronger than before. Resilience is defined as the ability to quickly recover from a difficult situation.

The importance of resilience is found in all areas of life. From a 4-year-old kid learning to ride a bike, to a college student leaving home for the first time, to an adult with a brilliant career in the face of harsh obstacles — their resilience shines through.

This ability to get back up when you fall is taught and developed throughout our lives.

6. Patience

It is an understatement to say that patience is a virtue. It’s really like a skill – a success trait that you can learn and that needs constant development.

Patience is a state of being that occurs between an experience and your reaction to the same. Whether you are trying to be patient with yourself, others, or life, it always seems to involve the experience of dealing with delays and obstacles.

By fostering patience, you can go beyond your limits and live with less stress, anxiety, and frustration.

7. Curiosity

Curiosity is the desire to learn and understand new things and know how they work. It manifests itself in many ways, either as a desire to read gossip rags, an urge to watch reality shows on television, or even as a desire to learn about people and their lives!

Being curious expands your horizons and opens them to other opinions, other lifestyles, and other topics.

Curious people ask questions, read and explore. They are actively seeking information and experience, challenging and broadening their horizons.

It is again, one of the best success traits for being the best at any job. As you ask questions, you learn from others and find ways to do your job better.

When curious people fail, they analyze their failure because they desperately want to know why they can be better next time.

8. Risk-taking

Talking about success traits… we have to talk about taking risks! It seems ridiculous to take risks. Why do you want to put yourself in situations which can hurt you? But your comfort zone is restricting your growth potential, and sometimes, you need to take a leap of faith to make your dreams come true. It is so important to take risks to help you grow and progress.

The benefits of taking risks are:

  • You learn from your mistakes
  • Taking risks helps you stand out from the crowd
  • You can find a starting point for you to pursue goals and ambitions
  • It empowers you
  • Risk taking also forces you to take the initiative
  • It helps you know yourself and your limits

Taking risks is a crucial part of life. You are forced to leave your comfort zone and commit yourself to a new and rewarding experience. And it is these new situations that allow you to adapt and grow!

9. Positivity

As a kid, we would sometimes hear adults say “You need a positive attitude.” But what does that really mean?

A positive attitude is one in which you believe and expect things to work. There may be many obstacles on the road of life.

And having a positive attitude simply means not sticking to negative things. Instead, you’ll be creative when it comes to finding ways to improve the situation. If you strongly believe and expect things to get better, they will eventually.

It gives you the hope, energy, and vitality you need to find a plan, stick to it, and ultimately succeed in that plan.

Having a positive attitude is closely related to the law of attraction, “what we think most, we attract”, and it is very important to attract what we want.

Focusing on a solution gives you the hope and motivation to work towards it. As we work towards the solution, we believe the situation may improve, which can be a great help in actually making the changes that are needed.

10. Integrity

Integrity and ethical behavior are important success traits. At the individual level, integrity means that you can justify what you are doing. It is doing the right thing in all situations, even when no one is watching. It is essential to building trust in your relationships, and creates a reputation for credibility and fairness.

Organizational integrity goes beyond administrative integrity. Messages, actions, policies, and leadership must be in line with positive principles that are supported by everyone in the organization. Successful leaders and honest institutions create a more economically productive society while also being more inclusive.

Integrity is a value recognized by most societies around the world today. It is also one of the most difficult values to achieve, as you need to prioritize the needs of others over your own. Being a sincere person means being trusted to do what you say and to stand behind your actions and decisions.

Success should not be reduced to something that is not important.

For an individual or group to continue to exist, they must actively achieve their goals. Otherwise, they will not be able to survive. For a company or industry to survive, it must succeed in developing new products, bringing those products to market, satisfying customers, employees and investors, and repeating this cycle over and over again.

Do you see how vital success is? Success breeds innovation; it creates opportunities and helps society advance.

In the words of one of the world’s greatest leaders:

“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” – Theodore Roosevelt

It is not impossible to achieve success. As people who work to bring changes in the world, as entrepreneurs, teachers, and coaches, we all have a responsibility to succeed and showcase our successes. Let others follow the path we carve out. We are the ones who will lead their way, one step at a time.
